What is upper eyelid lifting surgery?
Upper eyelid lifting surgery also called blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure performed to remove excessive skin and treat droopy eyelids. It is mainly done to improve the appearance of the eyes but may also prevent obstruction of vision. Eyelid lifting surgery may be combined with other cosmetic procedures such as filler injections, forehead lifts and laser resurfacing to enhance results.
Why is the procedure necessary?
With age, skin loses its elasticity and an excess fold of skin can develop on the upper eyelids making them appear droopy and obstruct vision. Eyelid lifting surgery is performed to correct these conditions.
Who is a good candidate for eyelid lifting surgery?
Eyelid lifting surgery is usually performed in people over 35 years of age or younger if droopy eyelids tends to run in the family. Those with overall good health and realistic expectations are ideal.
How is the procedure performed?
The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation. Incisions are made along the natural creases of the eyelids so that they remain hidden. Excess skin, fat and muscle is removed and the incisions are closed with fine sutures for approximately a week.
What are the postoperative care instructions?
You will need to have someone drive you home after the procedure and should plan to take several days off work. You may experience some pain, swelling and bruising for a week or two. Some people complain of having dry eyes. Ice cubes or an ice pack can help with your symptoms. Your doctor may prescribe eye drops or artificial tears along with pain medications. You should avoid over the counter medications that increase bleeding.
What are the risks associated with upper eyelid surgery?
Serious complications from eyelid surgery are rare but potential risks include

How long do the results last?
The results of eyelid surgery last approximately 5-7 years as you continue to age. Following this period, your doctor may recommend a forehead lift to improve your appearance.
